Female Leads
Horror movies have always been so ahead of the game. In the world we live in today being female is powerful! It seems its finally our turn to be the voice. I am obviously all for this even though it does feel a bit depressing when you think that it took from the women's rights movement til now to get here.
A lot of people are talking about Captain Marvel right now. The movie was released in March and since the day it came out the main thing people are talking about it the female lead! It is the first big blockbuster comic book movie with a female lead and hero! But hold up, horror films have been doing this forever, it is probably why I love them so much. Strong female lead is like the first hing you need in order to have a good horror film.
This is spelled out for you in the movie "Behind the Mask The rise of Leslie Vernon" a Documentary into the life of a serial killer. This movie was brilliant in so many ways, it was pretty much guideline to success in stalking and killing and understanding the formula of how to do it properly. One big thing this movie pointed out was in order to have a successful horror film there must be an established "Survivor Girl". To me this is my favorite part of Horror films, obviously because I am a woman but also because I love watching characters shift in movies. The nice shy girl in the beginning of the movie turns into the shockingly cunning genius who ends up bloodied going after the killer in the end to avenge her dead friends.
Not that we have established one of my favorite parts of Horror movies and that they "did it first" lets do some shout outs to some of my all time favorite Survivor girls!
